120 Years Celebrations – Nunney goes Victorian! As part of our 120th Anniversary Celebrations (which are taking place throughout 2016), on Friday 15th April 2016 we looked back to 1886 and recreated school life in Victorian times. All the staff dressed the part, and the children (thank you parents) were all brilliantly disguised in old-fashioned breeches, waistcoats and hats. Health & Safety did mean that they had to wear shoes – not something that all children would or could do in 1886. The day started with a Big Breakfast – bacon rolls – very kindly served by the PSA. After this, everyone set off on a sponsored walk around the playground through the classrooms (rain meant the field was too muddy). Lessons were strictly timed according to the handbell, the children sat in rows at individual desks, and had to call their teacher “Ma’am”. Boys had to take their hats off when the teacher came into the room, fingernails and hands were inspected for cleanliness and naughty children (of which there were very few) had to stand in the corner. The day was judged a great success – “we even liked the strict bits” said the children. Our May events in the Anniversary Celebrations are: 13th May – a Sports Evening in school 21st May – Bingo in school Keep an eye on your book bags for details. Mrs Andrews’ efforts on these 120th Anniversary Celebrations are proving very popular and very successful. So far she and her team have raised £3,000 towards a large piece of adventure climbing equipment for the school field that all children will be able to enjoy.
